The Gillingham Local History Society was founded in 1953 and its aims are twofold

1) to support the Gillingham Museum, an independent museum which is here to show you how more than a thousand generations have seen this corner of the Blackmore Vale grow from a Neolithic settlement to what it is today.

2) to bring local history to the inhabitants of Gillingham and the surrounding area.
From September to May the Society holds monthly lectures on topics of local and general history. These lectures are free to Society Members and guests/visitors are welcome (donations appreciated). Some summer visits are sometimes arranged. Members also receive, free of charge, our annual Journal that always contains interesting articles on historical aspects of the local area.
This is a great way to meet new people and find out something about the local area.
