Dorset & West Country Connections with Slavery


The talk
by Jane Ferentzi-Sheppard will look at the early days of settlement in the West Indies and North America, white indentured servants, rise of sugar and slavery in the area. Dorset and West country connections through the ages ending up with who got compensation in the 1830s and the families and fortunes that survived.
 
Jane is a local, family and migration historian, she has an MA in Regional and Local Studies. At present she is researching slavery in the West Country and the sugar industry in Bristol.
